My class was challenged to create a video, maximum 60 seconds in length, that comprehensively and concisely communicates the motivation, usage, and functionality of a health and fitness product or service. After I selected my app, I started by storyboarding our plan and the shots I would need to film.

From the storyboard I got peer feedback about what they thought my promo video might need. A particularly valuable piece of feedback I got was -

"A lot of exercise is about the off-screen time rather than looking at graphs and I think making a promo video for this app is a perfect opportunity to highlight that aspect. I'd suggest putting in lots of cinematic shots of people running/working out intermittently between the shots of the interface."

I realized from this that in my storyboard, while I had people in exercise gear, I didn't actually show anyone exercising in a promotion for an exercise app.

Incorporating the feedback, I made a rough cut of the promotion -

From this we did another round of peer feedback. I got responses on how they liked how the person looks into the camera, that the black and white was an interesting, attention grabbing choice, and that they were impressed it did the job in 30 seconds.

Areas I was suggested to improve were:

  • Add music to convey mood

  • Change the step count to 10,000 (A common goal for exercise apps)

  • Slow down when screenshots are shown

Using that feedback and things I personally felt needed modification I edited the promotion to create my final cut -
